The authors investigate the following nonlinear integral equation of Volterra type with maximum: \[ x(t)=a(t)+(Tx)(t)\int_0^t\phi(t,s)\max_{[0,r(s)]}| x(\tau)| \,ds,\quad t\in I, \] where \(I=[0,1]\), \(a(t)\), \(r(s)\), \(\phi(t,s)\), \((Tx)(t)\) are given functions while \(x=x(t)\) is an unknown function. Using the measure of noncompactness introduced by \textit{J. Banaś} and \textit{L. Olszowy} [Ann. Soc. Math. Pol., Ser. I, Commentat. Math. 41, 13--23 (2001; Zbl 0999.47041)] they prove the existence of solution of the above equation, which is continuous and nondecreasing on the interval \(I\). The main tool in the proof is the Darbo fixed point theorem for contractions with respect to axiomatic measures of noncompactness. The existence result is illustrated by two simple examples.
