A space \(X\) is an \(acc\) space (resp. (\(a\))-space) if for every open cover \(\mathcal U\) of \(X\) and every dense subset \(D\subset X\) there exists a finite (resp. discrete and closed in \(X\)) subset \(F\subset D\) such that \(\text{St}(F, {\mathcal U})=\bigcup\{U\in{\mathcal U}: U\cap F\not=\emptyset\}=X\). It is known that \(acc\)-spaces and (\(a\))-spaces are not a hereditary class with respect to regular closed subspaces. It is natural to ask what kind of spaces may be represented as certain types of closed subspaces of \(acc\) spaces or (\(a\))-spaces. In this paper spaces are characterized that can be embedded as regular closed subsets into \(acc\) spaces and (\(a\))-spaces, and two questions posed by \textit{M. V. Matveev} [Topology Appl. 80, 169--175 (1997; Zbl 0891.54008)] are answered.
