Let \(\tau\) be a representation of a topological group \(G\) on a Banach space \(X\). A linear functional \(\varphi\) on \(X\) is said to be \(\tau\)-invariant if \(\varphi(\tau(t)x)=\varphi(x)\) for all \(x\in X\) and \(t\in G\). If \(\sigma\) is a representation of \(G\) on another Banach space \(Y\), then a linear operator \(\Phi: X\to Y\) is said to commute with translations if \(\Phi\circ \tau(t)=\sigma(t)\circ \Phi\) for each \(t\in G\). Given a group of isometries of \(L^{p}(\mu)\) for some measure space \((\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)\) and \(1<p<\infty\), the authors consider the following questions: (i) is every invariant linear functional on \(L^{p}(\mu)\) continuous; (ii) is every linear operator from \(L^{p}(\mu)\) commuting with translations continuous; (iii) is every topologically invariant norm on \(L^{p}(\mu)\) equivalent to the norm \(\| \cdot\| _{p}\). They characterize the continuity of all the linear operators from \(L^{p}(\mu)\) which commute with translations and the property of \(\| \cdot\| _{p}\) being the unique norm (up to equivalence) on \(L^{p}(\mu)\) with respect to which all translations are continuous in terms of the finite dimensionality of the subspace of all invariant functions.
