For a nonlinear operator in Banach space with a Fréchet derivative that satisfies certain Hölder conditions there is an unknown region (here called terra icognita) between the convergence regions of the standard and the modified Newton method. It disappears in the case of a Lipschitz continuous derivative. By means of majorizing techniques, local and semilocal convergence results are proved that provide some improvements over known results.
