This paper is devoted to extending a number of well-known results in the general theory of frames in Hilbert space to what are called frames of subspaces, a notion introduced by Casazza and Kutyniok. A new definition of a so-called atomic resolution of the identity is given and the connection of this notion with the topic of frames of subspaces is developed in detail.
