For a GI/GI/1 queue under stability conditions the tail behavior of the busy period is investigated. The result exhibits the form that is expected when dealing with subexponential service time distributions and generalizes the so far known results from the literature. The results need ``minimal'' further technical assumptions on the interarrival and service time distributions. The proof relies on a large deviation result for subexponential random variables.
