Let \(X\) be a smooth projective curve of genus \(g\geq 2\) over \(\mathbb C\). Denote by \(M=M(n,L)\) the moduli space of stable rank \(n\) vector bundles on \(X\) of degree \(d\), with \(\text{gcd}(n,d)=1\) and with determinant \(L\) of degree \(d\). Let \(\mathcal U\) be the universal bundle on \(X\times M\). Let \({\mathcal U}_x= {\mathcal U}| _{\{x\}\times M}\), identified with a bundle on \(M\). The main result is that, if \(x\neq y\), then \({\mathcal U}_x\ncong {\mathcal U}_y\). This is applied to show that the map \(x \rightarrowtail {\mathcal U}_x\) from \(X\) to a component \({\mathcal M}_0\) of the moduli space \(\mathcal M\) of stable bundles on \(M\) with the same Hilbert polynomial as \({\mathcal U}_x\) is in fact an isomorphism. This last fact is stated without proof in the literature [cf. \textit{M. S. Narasimhan} and \textit{S. Ramanan}, Ann. Math. (2) 101, 391--417 (1975; Zbl 0314.14004)] or with a proof which seems incomplete [\textit{A. N. Tyurin}, Usp. Mat. Nauk 29, No. 6(180), 59--88 (1974; Zbl 0309.14033)]. The proof given in the paper under review is asserted to be in the spirit of the last quoted paper.
