The author constructs a boundary value space for a symmetric operator corresponding to a discrete version of the canonical system of differential equations. The operator, with deficiency index \((n,n)\), is defined on a dense domain in the weighted \(l_2\)-space of sequences indexed by \(\mathbb Z\), with values in \(E\oplus E\), \(\dim E=n<\infty\) (the case \(\dim E=1\) corresponds to the discrete Dirac system). A description of all maximal dissipative, maximal accretive, and self-adjoint extensions is given in terms of boundary conditions at \(\pm \infty\). The author investigates two classes of boundary conditions, called ``dissipative at \(-\infty\)'' and ``dissipative at \(+\infty\)''. For each of these cases, he constructs a self-adjoint dilation of the maximal dissipative extension and its incoming and outgoing spectral representation. This leads to the determination of the scattering matrix in terms of the Titchmarsh--Weyl matrix function, which, in turn, gives the characteristic function and the functional model of the maximal dissipative operator under consideration. The completeness of the system of its root vectors is also proved.
