Recall that, by the celebrated von Neumann inequality, every Hilbert space contraction is polynomially bounded (with constant \(1\)), and that this result does not extend to Banach space contractions. In the present paper, the author obtains some conditions under which a Banach space contraction is polynomially bounded. The obtained conditions involve the thinness of the spectrum and the behaviour of the resolvent, or the sequence of its negative powers. Some techniques form harmonic analysis (Helson and Kronecker sets, sets of spectral synthesis) are used.
