Properties of the balls in a semisimple Lie group \(G\) are studied. It is supposed that \(G\) is endowed with a left invariant distance (metric) \(d( \;,\;) \). The ball \(B( d( 0,y) ) \) with center in the neutral element \(0\) of \(G\) and of radius \(d( 0,y) \), \(y\in G\), is defined. Then, the limit of the volume \(| B( d( 0,y) ) | \) of such a ball is studied for the case when the radius of the ball goes to infinity. The maximal function associated to an arbitrary distance \(d( 0,y) \) is also obtained. The case of sub-Riemannian metric is analyzed in detail and some corresponding consequences are established.
