For any connected space \(X\) and rational subspace \(V\) of \(H_n(X)\) which is in the Hurewicz image of the Gottlieb space \(G({\mathbf S}^n_{\mathbf Q},X) \subseteq [{\mathbf S}^n_{{\mathbf Q}},X]\), the authors obtain a splitting \(X \simeq Y \times K(V,n)\). The Gottlieb space \(G(X,Y)\) is defined as the subset of those homotopy classes \(\alpha\colon X \to Y\) such that the map \(\text{id} + \alpha\colon X \vee Y \to Y\) factors through \(X \times Y\). The proof is fairly elementary and self-contained. Applications to \(T\)-spaces (spaces whose free loop fibration is trivial) and \(G\)-spaces (spaces for which \(G({\mathbf S}^n,X) = \pi_n(X)\)) are mentioned. While the main part is very readable, the introduction does not succeed well in introducing the problem. The large number of typographical and grammatical mistakes reflects poorly on the publisher.
