The authors consider the one-phase three-dimensional Stefan problem, in the liquid phase initially at fusion temperature, for inward solidification. The shape and speed of the solid-melt interface is described immediately before complete freezing takes place, as well as the temperature field in the vicinity of the extinction point. For general Stefan numbers the solution is sought via the Baiocchi transform. Analytical solution for the limiting case of large Stefan numbers is reported, as well as estimates for complete freezing times. Asymptotic analysis reveals that the shape of the interface ultimately approaches an ellipsoid, confirming results of earlier research [Proc. R. Soc. Lond., A, Math. Phys. Eng. Sci. 459, No. 2032, 977--999 (2003; Zbl 1041.35092)].
