The aim of the present paper is to determine the domains of attraction of freely stable laws in the sense of \textit{D. Voiculescu} [J. Funct. Anal. 66, 323--346 (1986; Zbl 0651.46063)]. The main tool used by the authors is the theory of so called functions of regular variation, due to Karamata (see, e.g., [\textit{E. Seneta}, ``Regularly varying functions'' (Lect. Notes in Math. 508, Springer--Verlag, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York) (1976; Zbl 0324.26002)]). The results show a complete analogy with the classical probability. Moreover, they can be used to provide alternative proofs of the corresponding classical arguments.
