The purpose of the paper is: (a) to clarify what it meant by spherical symmetry; (b) to review the basic formalisms that are useful in the context of spherical reduction; (c) to apply them to obtain the spherically symmetric Standard Model + gravity in a comprehensive manner; (d) to present an effective theory in \(d=2\) which then in principle can be quantized. Several new results are obtained: (a) it is shown that static perfect fluids can be regarded as generalised dilaton; (b) in the reduction of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dirac system an additional contribution is found; (c) the symmetry restoration of spontaneous symmetry breaking by giving an interpretation to the effective Higgs potential is discussed; (d) the Yukawa interaction is spherically reduced without fixing the isospin direction.
