Part I, on his life, is organized as follows: Introduction; Mathematical master; Moving to Cape Town; Educator (Background; Schools and colleges; Organisational; Muir College; Reforms; Trips; Language; Criticism; Farewell); The pensioner. Part II, on his mathematics, is organized as follows: His Mathematics; Hadamard's Inequality; Determinantal identities; Magnum Opus; Revised list of mathematical writings (321 titles). Thomas Muir's papers were neatly bounded into 14 volumes, arranged chronologically according to date of publication. The author indicates also the arrangement of these papers according to subjects: Aggregates of determinants or of products of determinants; Alternants; Arrays, oblong; Axisymmetric determinants; Compound determinants; Continuants; Continued fractions; Elimination and solution; General determinants; Hermitians and Hessians; Jacobians; Orthogonants; Permanents and recurrents; Persymmetric determinants; Pfaffians; Products of determinants; Skew determinants; Unclassified special determinants. There is also a list of 58 papers on education, historical nature or on other topics.
