The paper under review is related to the classical open problem whether every infinite-dimen\-sional complemented subspace of \(C(K)\), \(K\) compact metrizable, is isomorphic to \(C(L)\) for some compact metrizable space \(L\). This problem is connected with the general question about the structure of operators in \(C(K)\) spaces. \textit{J. Bourgain} [J.\ Oper.\ Theory 3, No.~2, 275--289 (1980; Zbl 0441.46022)] showed that if an operator \(T\) on \(C(K)\) preserves a copy of a Banach space having non-trivial cotype, then \(T\) preserves a copy of \(C(K)\). The main result of the paper under review states that every operator on \(C(K)\) which preserves a copy of an asymptotic \(\ell_1\) space (which can have trivial cotype) also preserves a copy of \(C(K)\).
