For \(C^*\)-algebras \(A\) and \(B\), the author introduces a topology on the \(KK\)-theory group \(KK(A,B)\) in terms of approximate unitary equivalence for Cuntz pairs and shows that this topology coincides with both the Pimsner topology and the Brown--Salinas topology. He studies then the Rørdam group \(KL(A,B)\), which is the quotient of \(KK(A,B)\) by the closure of the neutral element, and shows that if a separable exact residually finite-dimensional \(C^*\)-algebra satisfies the universal coefficient theorem in \(KK\)-theory, then it embeds in the UHF algebra of type \(2^\infty\).
