Let \( K\) be a field, \(p \in K[x]\) and let \(V\) be a linear space over \( K\). Assume that \(F\) is an algebraic operator on \(V\) (meaning that \(F\) has an annihilating polynomial of positive degree). The authors describe a procedure of solving of the functional equation \(p(T)=F\), where \(T\) is an unknown linear operator on \(V\). The method is based on a canonical decomposition theorem.
