The orbital stability problem for trajectories different from an equilibrium is one of the most difficult problems in the qualitative theory of dynamical systems. The difficulties are caused first of all by the fact that the operator of a variational equation of the system is time-varying. But known stability or instability criteria are formulated in terms of characteristic exponents or multipliers and are not always effective in application to concrete dynamical systems. For other orbital stability conditions it is necessary to determine or to estimate the exponential growth of solutions to the variational equation, computed with respect to the considered solution to the original nonlinear equation. Here, these difficulties are handled by deriving criteria for the orbital stability using estimates on the singular values of the fundamental operator of the variational system instead of Lyapunov exponents or characteristic exponents. A number of concrete dynamical systems are considered in order to demonstrate the approach proposed.
