On sait que les transformations du groupe de stabilité \(I(P)\) d'un point \(P\) d'une variété lorentzienne \(V_4\) induisent sur l'espace tangent \(T_p\) des sous-groupes conjugués \(A^q(P)\) de la composante connexe \(L_0\) du groupe de Lorentz; ces \(A^q(P)\) laissent invariants le tenseur de courbure et toutes ses dérivées covariantes lorsque \(V_4\) est localement isotrope et de classe \(C^\infty\). Les AA. montrent qu'inversement, l'existence en tout point de \(V_4\) de tels \(A^q(P)\) laissant invariants le tenseur de courbe et ses deux premières dérivées covariantes entrain l'existence d'un groupe d'isotropie et d'un groupe d'isométries. Ils établissent ainsi une classification des espaces localement isotropes.
