Let \(X\) be a projective nonsingular variety over \(\mathbb{R}\) with \(X (\mathbb{R})\) nonempty. The paper gives conditions under which the following are equivalent: (a) \(\alpha\) is algebraically equivalent to a thin cycle on \(X\); (b) \(\alpha\) is homologically equivalent to 0. The condition is fulfilled, for instance, if all homology classes of \(H_ * (X (\mathbb{R})\), \(\mathbb{Z}/2)\) are represented by algebraic subvarieties. If \(\alpha = \sum n_ i V_ i\) then \(\alpha\) is thin if each \(V_ i (\mathbb{R})\) is not dense in \(V_ i\). If \(\text{cl} : Z_ *(X) \to H_ * (X(\mathbb{R}), \mathbb{Z}/2)\) is the natural map from cycles to homology of the \(\mathbb{R}\)-rational points of \(X\) then (b) means that \(\text{cl}(\alpha) = 0\).
