Author's introduction: In a recent paper with a similar name [J. Approx. Theory 5, 228--237 (1972; Zbl 0227.39004)] the author examined the connection between the approximation of continuous functions on certain compact sets by functions of the special form \(A(x)+B(y)\), and the solution of a related system of functional equations. In the present paper, he discusses a more general form of this, and illustrates it by applying it to the approximation of continuous functions of three variables by functions of the special form \(A(x)+B(y)+C(z)\), or the form \(A(x,y)+B(y,z)+C(z,x)\).
