Let \(f\) be a normalized Hecke eigenform of weight \(k\) for the full modular group and let \(a(n)\) denote its \(n\)-th Fourier coefficient. We prove that \[ a(n)=\Omega_{\pm}\left(n^{(k-1)/2}\exp(c\log n/\log\log n)\right) \] for some \(c>0\). An essential ingredient in the proof is the non-vanishing of \(L\)-series attached to the symmetric powers of \(f\). In particular, we prove that the \(L\)-series attached to the third and fourth symmetric powers of \(f\) do not vanish on the line \(\Re s=1\).
