The paper contains characterizations of some important congruence properties of varieties in terms of polynomial conditions. Especially, there are investigated connections among such properties as congruence distributivity, filtrality, restricted equationally definable principal congruences (REDPC) and dual discriminator property. It is proven that REDPC implies congruence distributivity. A generalization of the Mal'tsev condition - the so called Pixley condition - is defined and it is shown that filtrality and REDPC are Pixley conditions. There are studied also connections with other important congruence conditions.
