A Lagrangian method is demonstrated for the numerical solution of the shallow water equations. The fluid is represented by a number of points, each point being associated with a partition of the fluid which is nearer to it than to any other point. The principle of least action is used to advance the points in time, with the partitioning of the fluid being changed after each time step. Points are combined if a shock forms in the flow. The method is applied to the dam-break problem and compared with the analytical solution.
