In order to determine the optimum unit size in experiments one needs to know the between-units variance \(V_ g\) as a function of unit size g. The authors derive unbiased estimators for \(V_ g\) under the randomization model. Explicit formulae are presented for completely randomized, randomized block and balanced incomplete block designs.
