It has been shown that the kinematics of a shock front in an ideal gas with constant specific heat can be completely described by a unique first order nonlinear partial differential equation which reduces to a characteristic partial differential equation when the shock strength tends to zero. The method is used for weak shock waves and it gives good results which agree with previously obtained results. The theory is yet to be tested for a strong shock wave.
