This important article continues (and in part supplants) the authors' work in Part I [ibid. 72, 237-268 (1981; Zbl 0471.16018)]. The main result of the present article is the following ''Essentiality Theorem'': Let S be a prime normalizing extension of R and let I be a nonzero ideal of S. Then I is essential in \({}_ RQ(S)_ R\), where Q(S) denotes the Martindale ring of right quotients of S. In particular, this shows that \(I\cap R\) is nonzero, thereby reproving the Incomparability Theorem of the earlier article. Throughout the article, particular emphasis is given to the structure of S as an (R,R)-bimodule. Some of the results in the later sections are crucial for the authors' subsequent paper [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 282, 645-667 (1984; Zbl 0534.16021)].
