Let D be a closed subset of a Banach space X; T:\(D\to D\) a nonexpansive mapping. Main results. Theorem 1. (a) If X is reflexive and strictly convex, then the weak \(\lim_{n\to \infty}T^ nx/n\) exists for each x in D (and is independent of x); (b) If \(X^*\) has a Fréchet differentiable norm, then the strong \(\lim_{n\to \infty}T^ nx/n\) exists. Theorem 2. If \(X^*\) is strictly convex and has a Fréchet differentiable norm, then the following are equivalent: (i) \(\lim_{t\to \infty}\inf d(0,R(I+t(I-T)))/t=0;\) (ii) \(-\lim_{n\to \infty}T^ nx/n\) is the unique point of least norm in \(c\ell(R(I-T));\) (iii) \(\lim_{n\to \infty}| T^ nx| /n=d(0,R(I-T)).\) Some applications to accretive operators and nonlinear semigroups are given.
