Adequate semigroups were defined by \textit{J. B. Fountain} [Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 22, 113-125 (1979; Zbl 0414.20048)] as semigroups S such that the idempotents of S commute and there is an idempotent in each of the \({\mathcal L}^*\) and \({\mathcal R}^*\) classes. Here \({\mathcal L}^*\) (and analogously \({\mathcal R}^*)\) is a generalization of Green's relation \({\mathcal L}:\) elements a and b are related by \({\mathcal L}^*\) iff they are related by \({\mathcal L}\) in some oversemigroup of S. Type A semigroups are adequate semigroups S with \(ea=a(ea)^*\), \(ae=(ae)^{\dag}a\) for all idempotents e and for all a in S, where \(a^* (a^{\dag}\), resp.) denotes the unique idempotent in the \({\mathcal L}^*\)-class (\({\mathcal R}^*\)-class) of a. The author gives a characterization of the structure of type A semigroups by using *-traces as it was done by \textit{J. Meakin} [Semigroup Forum 12, 6-14 (1976; Zbl 0325.20062)] for inverse semigroups.
