Let V be a finite dimensional subspace of \(L^ p\), \(1<p<\infty\). For \(f\in L^ p\setminus V\) it is shown that the best approximation \(g^*\in V\) to f is strongly unique of order \(\alpha =2\) or \(\alpha =p\). That is, for some \(M>0\), there exists \(r=r(f,M)>0\) such that for all \(g\in V\) with \(\| g^*-g\|_ 1\leq M\), \(\| f-g\|_ p\geq \| f-g^*\|_ p+r(\| g-g^*\|_ p)^{\alpha}.\) In the case where \(p=1\), it is shown that if V is a Haar subspace of \(C_ 1[a,b]\), the space of continuous functions on [a,b] with the \(L^ 1\) norm, and \(f\in C_ 1[a,b]\setminus V\) satisfies a Lipschitz condition so that \(V_ 1=span\{V,f\}\) is also a Haar subspace, then the best approximation to f from V is strongly unique of order \(\alpha =2\). We make mention that this last result is a special case of a theorem by \textit{A. Kroo} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 83, 725-729 (1981; Zbl 0484.41039)].
