The author offers some evidence that the Erlanger program was not so influential in the development of late-nineteenth-century mathematics as has been generally believed. In particular he notes the influence of the work of Sophus Lie along similar lines, and argues that it is difficult to disentangle all the factors which were acting at the time and point to any single one as the main factor.
