This paper gives an analysis of the output process of an M/M/1 queueing model where the arrival and service rates vary randomly. Many real service facilities can be modelled as queueing systems where the parameters vary randomly over time. Results for the mean, variance and distribution of the interdeparture interval, the joint density function of two successive interdeparture intervals and their correlations have been obtained under equilibrium conditions. Some numerical results are presented and interpreted with respect to the example given by \textit{M. F. Neuts}, Opsearch 15, 139-157 (1978; Zbl 0409.60089). An interesting feature of the results is that the moments of the interdeparture time are expressed in terms of the expected times to first and second departures from an arbitrary point in time.
