This paper shows how to reduce the computation of algebraic homotopy groups (in the sense of Quillen) for algebraic groups G over algebraically closed fields to the computation of the corresponding groups for the universal covers of the simple quotients of G. These latter groups have interpretations as appropriate higher K-groups of the base field. The reduction steps impose themselves quite naturally in view of the well known structure theory of algebraic groups.
