Le modèle de régression non linéaire (1) peut se présenter sous la forme \(E(Y)=\mu (\beta)\), \(Cov(Y)=\sigma^ 2V(\mu)\) où Y est un vecteur \(n\times 1\) et \(\beta\) un paramètre vectoriel \(p\times 1\) inconnu. Le modèle linéaire généralisé de Nelder et Wedderburn concerne le cas (2) où l'on peut écrire \(\eta =X\beta\) et \(\eta_ i=g(\mu_ i)\) (X est une matrice \(n\times p\) et g une fonction données). Cet article passe en revue les divers aspects de l'extension aux cas si-dessus des méthodes de la régression linéaire, en concentrant l'attention sur les propriétés du second ordre (hypothèses portant sur les moyennes, variances et covariances plutôt que sur la distribution précise de Y). Plusieurs applications sont indiquées relevant pour la plupart, mais non exclusivement, de la situation (2): régression binaire, modèles log-linéaires, régression avec coefficient de variation constant, réponses multinomiales, modèles additifs-multiplicatifs, régression canonique. L'utilité des modèles du type (2) est discutée (flexibilité, interprétabilité) de même que l'analyse de la déviance et la sélection des variables explicatives. Les problèmes de calcul sont enfin brièvement mentionnés.
