The author studies the effect of numerical integration on the rate of convergence of finite element approximation to a degenerate initial- boundary value problem. Under suitable accuracy and consistency conditions for the quadrature scheme and the finite element space, it is shown hat the approximate solution converges to the exact solution at an optimal rate in the \(W^ 1_ 2\)-norm, and also in the \(L_ 2\)-norm.
