The authors prove three major theorems concerning existentially closed groups and skew fields. According to Theorem C there is a universal locally finite group N of cardinality \(2^{\aleph_ 0}\) such that every uncountable subgroup generates the variety of all groups. Theorems A, B deal with the existence of uncountably many non-commuting elements within any uncountable subset of N where N is an existentially closed group or skew field, or a universal locally finite group. In all cases the cardinal of N is \(2^{\aleph_ 0}\). This improves earlier work of A. Macintyre who needed additional set theoretic assumptions for his proofs.
