Two basic models for reaction time are analyzed. Under the first model's assumptions the reaction time is a sum of three random variables, and three theorems about the mean reaction time are presented. The second model assumes that the first two terms in the sum are replaced by the maximum of them. Another three theorems are given about the mean reaction time for this second model. The theorems are presented without proofs and they can be found in the author and \textit{F. G. Ashby}, The stochastic modelling of elementary psychological processes. Cambridge University Press (1983). The main part of the paper is devoted to the extensive critique of experimental strategy and statistical evaluation of reaction time data.
