For the theta series \(\Theta_F^{(n)}(Z,\Phi)\) associated with an \((m,m)\) even integral positive-definite matrix \(F\), variable \(Z\) in the Siegel upper half-plane of degree \(n\) and an elementary spherical function \(\Phi\) of degree \(n\) and weight \(\nu\) with respect to \(F\), \textit{A. N. Andrianov} and \textit{G. N. Maloletkin} [Math. USSR, Izv. 9, 227--241 (1975); translation of Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 39, 243--258 (1975; Zbl 0316.10017)] obtained explicit transformation formulae under substitutions from the congruence subgroup \(\Gamma_0^{(n)}(q)\), of level \(q=q(F)\), in the Siegel modular group of degree \(n\); these theta series represent modular forms of degree \(n\) and weight \(m/2+\nu\) with a multiplier system for \(\Gamma_0^{(n)}(q)\) and are cusp forms for \(\nu >0\) [cf. the reviewer, Math. Ann. 224, 149--156 (1976; Zbl 0335.10030)]. The author studies the transformation formulae for theta series associated with \((m,m)\) totally positive matrices \(F\) having entries from the ring of algebraic integers in a totally real number field \(K\) and with \(Z\) now in the (corresponding) Hilbert-Siegel half-plane. As an application, the author exhibits, for \(8\mid n\), a non-trivial Hilbert-Siegel cusp form of weight \(n/2+1\), whenever \(K\) has even degree and admits a modular imbedding and further concludes that the Hilbert-Siegel modular variety is then of ``general type''.
