An indication is given as to how approximate solutions to Maxwell's equations can be found using a finite element Galerkin procedure. The approximate solutions found obey the energy balance equations. The dispersion relations are determined and a discussion is given of the parasitic modes. The results obtained are applied to a two-dimensional discussion of heating of deep-seated tumors.
