This paper is part of the author's habilitation thesis. It deals with various approximation-theoretic questions in connection with probabilistic representations of operator semigroups. Direct as well as indirect theorems are established where the variances of the underlying distributions play the essential role. Applications to classical approximation theory as well as Poisson approximation are also given.
