In this paper an overview of seasonal adjustment procedures is given. The basic problems involved in seasonal adjustment - both theoretically and practically ones - are clarified by discussing in a first step two very simple adjustment procedures. Then the most important procedures are classified into three categories (ratio-to-moving average methods, regression methods, filter-design methods) and discussed in some detail. The relationships and methodological differences between these different approaches are outlined.
