Several authors have dealt with continuation of periodic orbits of a differential equation depending on a parameter as the parameter is varied. \textit{J. Mallet-Paret} and \textit{J. A. Yorke} [ibid. 43, 419-450 (1982; Zbl 0487.34038)] investigated in generic situations how connected components of orbits must terminate. In this paper this theory is extended to the general case, dropping genericity assumptions.
