    We study Bernstein-type operators defined on \(L^ 1(T)\) where T is the simplex of \({\mathbb{R}}^{\ell}:\{x|\) \(x_ i>0\), \(\sum^{\ell}_{i=1}x_ i<1\}\) by: \(M_ nf(X)=\int_{T}K_ n(X,U)\quad f(U)\quad dU\), where \(K_ n(X,U)=((n+\ell)!/n!)\sum_{| k| \leq n}P_{nh}(X)P_{nh}(U)\) and \(P_{nh}(X)=(n!/h!(n-| h|)!)X^ h(1-| X|)^{n-| h|}.\) The operator \(M_ n\) is self-adjoint and preserves various degrees of polynomials of degree \(\leq n\). So \(M_ nf\) can be written as a Fourier-type sum. Like the classical Bernstein polynomials, the operators \(M_ n\) have the property of simultaneous approximation: \(D^ kM_ nf\) converges uniformly to \(D^ kf\), the order of approximation is in \(n^{-1/2}\). Therefore it is proved that \(M_ nf\) converges to f in \(L^ p(T)\), the order of approximation in \(L^ p(T)\) is in \(n^{-1/2}\) meeting again the similar property of Bernstein-Kantorovitch polynomials on \(L^ p(0,1).\) The operators \(M_ n\) generalize those introduced on \(L^ 1(0,1)\) by J. L. Durrmeyer and studied by the author [J. Approximation Theory 31, 325- 343 (1981; Zbl 0475.41025)].
