Constructing an appropriate sequence of approximate solutions the author proves its convergence to a weak solution u, satisfying the entropy condition, of the problem \(u_ t=f(u)_ x\), \(u(x,0)=U(x)\), where \(u=(u_ 1,u_ 2)\), \(f(u)=(u_ 2,\sigma (u_ 1))\) and \(\sigma \in C^ 2({\mathbb{R}},{\mathbb{R}})\) is strictly convex and increasing, \(x\in {\mathbb{R}}\), \(t\in [0,T)\) for some \(T>0\). The initial condition U is assumed to be of bounded variation and to have a compact support.
