A finite element method for two-dimensional incompressible flow problems is presented, in which the dependent variables are the stream function and a stress function. The method is applied to both steady and unsteady flows, with boundary conditions on plane rigid walls. The example presented is of circulating flow in a square cavity driven by a moving rigid boundary on the top of the cavity. Free surface boundary conditions are not considered.
