A 1-1 correspondence between classes of Yang-Mills fields over \(S^ 2\) and conjugacy classes of closed geodesics of the structure group is established. It is shown that the critical point of the Yang-Mills functional is equal to the index of the corresponding critical point of the energy functional. This means that classes of Yang-Mills connections are isolated.
