The deterministic Gompertz growth function is extended to stochastic Gompertz birth-and-death processes in order to describe more realistically cancer growth especially of tumors containing only a small numbers of cells. It is announced that the application of such models to the description and analysis of experimental data by means of two-stage models of carcinogenesis taking tumor progression into account will be discussed elsewhere.
