A design study of Linear Quadratic Gaussian (L.Q.G.) control system to reduce unacceptable, slow, nonlinear oscillations, which occur when large tankers are moored to offshore oil pumping terminals, indicates that the oscillations almost disappear when the optimal controllers are activated.
