Further developing results by D. C. Lewis jun., S. Sternberg, K.-T. Chen, J. Écalle, L. Reich, J. Schwaiger and W. Bucher, the author shows that for an automorphism F of the ring of formal power series in n complex variables, the following six statements are equivalent. (We use the terminology of the reviewer's book Topics in iteration theory (1981; Zbl 0454.39003).) (i) F has a logarithm: it can be represented as an exponential; (ii) F is embeddable in an analytic complex iteration group; (iii) F is embeddable in an analytic real iteration group; (iv) F is embeddable is a continuous complex iteration group; (v) F is embeddable in a continuous real iteration group; (vi) F is embeddable in a rational iteration group continuous in the topology on \({\mathbb{Q}}\) induced by the topology of \({\mathbb{R}}\).
